Ohira Suita
Ohira Suita
Size (mm) / Weight
182x65x32 / 911g
Performance
Hardness / Fineness: 3 / 4-
This stone easy to use and an ideal fineness for polishing and sharpening of kitchen knives. It will work up a slurry if you'd like and refine if lighter pressure is used. It is fairly fast and will leave a well contrasted kasumi polish. The feedback is smooth wit enough chalky grip to give the user a good sense of sharpening progress. This stone would be a great, value-minded workhorse for sharpening and polishing.
Aesthetics & Other Notes
This suita has a pale cream / blue colored base, a sparse red renge, and a few benign golden lines.
Ohira (大平, Oohira, Ohirayama)
A Western mine famous for Uchigumori and the quality of its suita. Although the mine is still occasionally worked, it is increasingly challenging to find uchigumori and Ohira suita available for export. Reportedly, many togishi are worried about the long term supply of quality uchigumori stones. Due to the premium that comes with Ohira suita and uchigumori, many less scrupulous sellers will attempt to pass off stones from other mines as Ohira.
